Do you have pursuits that are not realized?

Process this topic more deeply and gain a better understanding of what is holding your back using the supplementary workbook.

In front of an overflowing Baylor University crowd in 2011, Condoleezza Rice encouraged the audience to stop waiting around to take action just because they might lack a role model that looks like them. Dr. Rice was direct and unapologetic. Thank you Dr. Rice!

  • Do you have professional pursuits that are not realized?

  • What is holding you back? Do you know?

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is our ability to truly look at ourselves and how our actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with our internal standards and the outcomes we desire. Having self-awareness gives us the opportunity to increase self-confidence, it gives us the power to influence outcomes and it helps us become better decision-makers.

There is not just one way to practice self-awareness. Like physical exercise – we all know it’s a good idea to move our bodies, it’s less important which activity we choose to keep our bodies moving. Practicing self-reflection so that we can be more self-aware is like this. It critical to do but less important how. Life is full of noise and business – excuses for not doing self-reflection, but I promise you it’s worth it and being more self-aware will help you figure out what is holding you back and promote your ongoing success. I get it though, it's not always easy. This takes great effort and intentionality.

For me practicing self-reflection to be more self-aware often means going for a walk, without my headphones or my phone. Just me, the fresh air and a couple miles of processing time. Anything that allows you the opportunity to get quiet with yourself, to look within without distraction works. Other great examples might be setting up a regular quiet time, journaling, meditation… again whatever works for you, is the right choice.

Self-reflection is foundational to self-awareness. We need this time to think deeply about our feelings, thoughts, and goals in order to gain an even better understanding of who we are and our place in the world. No matter when or how you practice self-reflection I want to encourage you to approach yourself with gentleness and curiosity.

Private and Public Awareness

Being able to notice and reflect on one’s internal state is what we consider private (or internal) self-awareness. Another aspect of self-awareness is our awareness of how we appear to others. Being aware or consciousness in this way helps us demonstrate humility, acknowledge feedback, and grow and develop in beneficial ways. Am I the only one that sometimes loses sight of the big picture? Assess our public (or external) awareness can encourage us to ask others about their perception of us. Getting specific will help to give you the most concrete feedback.

What are you capable of?
