Influence without Authority
Sometimes, not being heard has nothing to do with your voice volume.
Influence plays a significant role in our ability to communicate our message. People with influence tend to be more trusted and recognized.
Do you want to be trusted? Recognized?
Let's master this skill and support your efforts to persuade, encourage, and influence people.
Start Here ▶ First you need to understand more fully what we are talking about. Experts identify two kinds of influence: transformational and transactional influence.
1️⃣ Transactional influence is often used in top-down, hierarchical organizations and focuses on the tasks to be done. As a leader you would use this type of influence to direct.
2️⃣ Transformational influence is rooted in empathy and is often seen within flat organizations. Leading with this kind of influence relies on encouragement and support to motivate and inspire others. As transformational influence becomes increasingly critical, let's focus on it and how to master it.
↘ To strengthen your ability to influence people you need to:
⭐ Build rapport and connections with the people you want to influence - if you are a newcomer to the group or organization and or a first time manager be sure to spend time getting to know the team.
⭐ Become an active listener - Listen first. Invite feedback.
⭐ Commit to your team - find ways to show others that you are committed to the group. Be willing to help. This promotes buy-in, accountability, collaboration, and collective success.
⭐ Be consistent - Can people count on you? Can they trust you with significant projects? Actions speak louder than words. Make sure you show up and follow through.
⭐ Set an excellent example - This requires authenticity, transparency and recognizing others' efforts.
Does this feel possible?
Influence is a form of power in any situation, and especially in the workplace. Whether you hold an official leadership title or not, everyone has the potential to influence.
